Fairbanks, Alaska

Day 1 - 6/21 : The Ride Begins….

Here we go!

Day 1

Day 1 - 6/21

Perfect weather, made good time and finished ride by 1:30.
Rode along side a moose for awhile.

Manager of RV place in Delta Junction, Joe Camacho, was generous and gave us a free night.

Still figuring out best way to coordinate bike and support vehicle during ride. But we did Day One.

Day 2

Day 2 - 6/22

Beautiful ride through Tanana river valley - sunshine for half of the day and rain for the other half….

End of Day 2

Day 2 - 6/22

The Alaska mountain range was to the left for my 110 mile ride.
Rivers are huge and still have ice on them.

Tomorrow starts with known lousy road conditions.

We enjoy reading the dedications so keep sending.

Day 3

Day 3 - 6/23

Spent the night in Tok with 30 Boy Scouts from Michigan - lots of colorful tents. Check for Marj wrapped in blanket in the midst.

Day 3

Day 3 - 6/23

Started raining at 8:00 am with a temperature of 45 degrees. Road conditions less than ideal. Check out the photo.

Met two other wet and cold bikers going in the opposite direction - one from Winnipeg and one from Germany.

Day 3

Day 3 - 6/23

Unfortunately, we had enough time to bond with the flagman while we waited for a lead car to take us through the construction zone.

Day 4 - John on bike in gravel

Day 4 - 6/24

Wet, cold and lots of construction for at least 50 miles, but big excitement was trouble with electrical system of the RV causing a shrieking alarm. Making unexpected day off in Whitehorse, Yukon to get it fixed.

Many RVers have small dogs. One guy walking his small poodle goes by while Marjie and I are talking to the maint.man. He whispers conspiritorially in our ear... we call them dogs 'eagle bait.' Apparently the bald eagles love little dogs which may explain why everyone has a HUGE dog.

Some people wanted to know what I think about when I ride - mostly nothing. Sometimes I think about how much further I have to go, the scenery, road conditions, sing songs to myself, wonder what the hell I am doing out here, or none of your business.

Day 4 - Yukon Endo Center

Day 4 - 6/24

Special note to Audrey Meyers, Richie Keenan and the rest of the administration: competition for patients is fierce even in the Yukon - note the pictures of Beaver Creek's first free-standing endoscopy center……

Day 4 - Yukon Limo

Day 4 - 6/24

...and they even have limo service!

Day 5

Day 5 - 6/25

Unexpected day off in Whitehorse to fix the RV turned into a great time. Went to a wonderful native art gallery and bought a neat small sculpture. As luck would have it, masses of humanity gathered in the center of town for the start of the annual Yukon River Quest race. This is a canoe or kayak race from Whitehorse to Dawson City - 700km. The winner is usually done in 3 days!

Day 5

Day 5 - 6/25

All sorts of characters participate and can man a "ship" solo or in groups of paddlers.

Day 5

Day 5 - 6/25

The start was very exciting, kind of like a triathlon. The river is amazingly fast. Weather was spectacular finally and the RV got fixed - maybe????

How 'bout doing this river race next year Janet and Alex - you know who you are.
