Great scenery |
Days 22 & 23
Favorable conditions for biking continue with improving weather (still cold) good tail winds and great roads in Saskatchewan. Not as flat as you might think but the scenery
is very pleasing, with all the fields growing different crops.
You can tell we're getting further south as there are more farm animals now. For you horse lovers, we stopped in Wilkie Sask. for the nite next to some horses and ponies. We tried to feed them but they ignored us.
No people in the park and no services, so we 'dry camped' and survived.

Great cows |
For my money give me cows over horses any day. Much more intelligent. When you bike past a horse they don't even look up from munching the grass. When you bike past cows, they will often run up to the fence to see what's going on, especially the little calves.
Typical conversation with a cow:
 |
"Hey, where you going?" |
 |
"Saskatoon." |
 |
"O boy, Saskatoon? Can we go? We never get to go anywhere. I like your yellow jacket. I can ride a bike too, ya know. Please take us, we won't be no trouble. I'll make you a pie, if you'll open the gate" |
This happens all the time!
|

Marjie and Judy |
Great to see my sister Judy who flew to Saskatoon to meet us for the day off so we'll see the sights. She is a retired pediatric gastroenterologist. What's with these McConnells and the G.I. tract?
|

Biggar Sask. "Great sign eh!" |
So far, what we've seen is very nice with lots of parks, museums, and nice civic type stuff. We're off to the Ukranian museum today. Lots of sunshine and warmer weather.

Days 24 & 25
Yesterday was Small Flying Bug Day in Saskatchewan. It was also warm enough to go with short sleeves and sun block. The little bugs would fly into me and get stuck in the sun block and the sweat so that at the end of the day I looked like a medium rare steak au poivre. Anyway, it was nice to ride warm and sunny for a change. The weather, winds and roads by and large have been spectacular.

Crops in the field |
| Today was warm and sunny again. We can tell we’re getting farther south as the crops are changing again, with lots of wheat. We see huge grain elevators about every 10 miles, lots of trains and large trucks hauling grain. The towns seem to be built around the grain elevators…..LARGE elevator, LARGE town - small elevator, small town.

I'm going to do a blog on the BIG trucks and their effects on a bicycle. I think the truckers know what they do 'cause they give me plenty of room when they pass (both ways).
|
Tonite we are in Nickle Lake Park outside of Weyburn, Saskatchewan- our last nite in Canada. I’ll be sorry to see Canada go (great people, great scenery, great roads, tailwinds), but it will be good to get back into the USA.

Canada reminds me to keep hydrated |
John gives the OK sign |
Our evening activity was watching a co-ed softball game. Beautiful park, sunny evening, players laughing, drinking beer in the outfield, little kids running around. Norman Rockwell would be proud.
